Action Alert: Add your voice to ensure polluters clean up their mess

Oil and gas operators must put up a bond that is supposed to cover the cost of cleanup after operations are completed. Due to outdated bonding rules, the public ends up paying to plug wells to prevent them from releasing toxins into the air and water. In the last five years, over $100 million in public funds–state and federal–has been spent to clean up abandoned wells. We still face up to $1.6 billion in future cleanup costs.

Talking Points for public comment on Clean Transportation Fuel Program

In 2024, Governor Lujan Grisham signed a bill to establish a clean transportation fuels program to help protect New Mexico from climate change. The legislation requires a 20% reduction in New Mexico fuel carbon intensity by 2030 and a 30% reduction by 2040 compared to 2018. The rule holds the potential to generate hundreds of millions of dollars to support faster progress in cleaning up vehicle pollution and it is an important part of New Mexico’s climate strategy.

The first Environmental Improvement Board hearing is happening Monday, September 22nd, 2025, and it’s the perfect time to tell the Board to support the strongest possible clean transportation fuel program. New Mexico has a real opportunity to lead here. As the second largest producer of oil and gas in the country, a strong clean transportation fuel program may encourage other states to follow what we do.

Press Release: Health Advocates, Unions, and Workers Call For Strong Worker Heat Protection Rules as Soon as Possible

On Monday June 2nd, a coalition of health advocates, unions, workers, and community leaders gathered for a press conference to call on the New Mexico Environment Department and the Environmental Improvement Board to approve the strongest possible heat standard for workers. The event was held at the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico (AFT NM) office in Albuquerque. The group represents a growing coalition of 49 different organizations, called Safe Work For All, representing tens of thousands of New Mexicans calling for protection from extreme heat that has become the new norm due to climate change.
