Next Governor to Determine Worker Heat Safety Standard

July 28, 2026

Last Friday, July 24th 2026, the New Mexico Environment Department filed a request to delay the worker heat safety standard rulemaking until March 2027, marking the fourth delay to the rule since it was introduced. The rulemaking, initiated by the Environment Department in March of 2025, aims to protect New Mexicans experiencing a workplace heat index above 80 degrees by requiring access to drinking water, shaded or cooled recovery areas, rest breaks, and acclimatization protocols for new workers. Workers exposed to heat stress or high temperatures face risks of heat stroke, exhaustion, cramps, rashes, and other occupational hazards. Extreme heat exposure can also lead to worker fatality.

Learning Lab: The Voting Rights Act of 1965

Last week, the United States Supreme Court ruled to throw out Louisiana’s new voting maps, citing them as unconstitutional gerrymandering (Louisiana v Callais et al.). This ruling directly conflicts with the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which was created to remedy voter suppression that resulted in the gross underrepresentation of Black voters. CVNM Education Fund Applauds NM State Land Office for Denying “Green Chile Project” Right-Of-Way

he New Mexico State Land Office announced that it had denied an application from Texas-based energy company Energy Transfer for the “Green Chile Project,” a natural gas pipeline proposed to cut through state trust lands to provide natural gas for the controversial Project Juptier data center. This marks the newest hurdle for the project, which has been widely opposed for its projected water consumption and the 2GW of natural gas the facility plans to operate privately.

Press Release: Health Advocates, Unions, and Workers Call For Strong Worker Heat Protection Rules as Soon as Possible

On Monday June 2nd, a coalition of health advocates, unions, workers, and community leaders gathered for a press conference to call on the New Mexico Environment Department and the Environmental Improvement Board to approve the strongest possible heat standard for workers. The event was held at the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico (AFT NM) office in Albuquerque. The group represents a growing coalition of 49 different organizations, called Safe Work For All, representing tens of thousands of New Mexicans calling for protection from extreme heat that has become the new norm due to climate change.
