#GivingTuesdayNM: Help NM kids breathe easy

By November 28, 2017People & Health, Juntos

It’s Giving Tuesday, and we need your help to give New Mexican school kids a great gift: clean air and easy breathing. Give today and your gift will be TRIPLED!

Hundreds of thousands of New Mexico schoolchildren breathe in toxic diesel fumes from school buses. Converting to clean electric buses that don’t spew exhaust would dramatically reduce our climate change impact and severe health issues like lung infections, bronchitis and wheezing. Dirty diesel causes more frequent, more intense asthma attacks in children and adults.

The best part? New Mexico already has $18 million in earmarked funds to offset diesel pollution. That’s enough to jumpstart the transition to clean electric school buses. This Thursday, CVNM Education Fund (CVNMEF) will join concerned mothers, youth, teachers and community leaders to rally and demand that the funds go into the clean bus transition. Juntos community leaders will travel up to Santa Fe to submit nearly 2,000 public comments to the record in support of the clean bus transition!

This #GivingTuesdayNM we want to share with you why our staff gives to and works for CVNM Education Fund.

From our Executive Director, Demis Foster: “I joined the CVNM family of organizations because it was a political powerhouse for mother earth and that appealed to me as a life-long tree-hugger and environmentalist.”

Here’s CVNM Education Fund Program Director Molly Sanders, “I give my time and money because I believe NM and its people are not a sacrifice zone. Pollution, from climate change to mining, is making our families sick from asthma, cancers, and more. As New Mexicans, we deserve to drink clean water, breathe clean air, and to have healthy, resilient communities and families.”

I give a monthly donation because our kids deserve to breathe clean air. We can’t wait for change to happen in Washington–we have to lead at the local level.” – Allison Fabara, Development Director

“I give money and my skills because I want my son, and all future generations, to have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink and healthy land to produce our food.” – Roberto Aponte, Operations Director

“I give my time and energy because inspiring New Mexicans to get involved and take action on behalf of this beautiful place we call home is such important work. When I joined the CVNM team more than five years ago, I was elated to find people who are as interested in their connection to our home planet as I am!

As the communications director, it’s my job to connect with other New Mexicans who care about our air, land, water and communities. Then I get to connect them to our work and their own neighbors who believe in and value the same things. I found my community when I found CVNM and I hope to be able to help others find some community too.” – Liliana Castillo, Communications Director

“I give everything I can because it’s about survival.” – Ben Shelton, Political Director
