FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Santa Fe – Today, Senators Mimi Stewart, Jacob Candelaria, Representative Nathan Small and a coalition of community organizations, labor unions, and environmental advocates introduced the Energy Transition Act (ETA). The ETA (SB 489) will reduce electricity costs; help San Juan workers; diversify and strengthen our economy; protect our air, land, water and public health; and allow New Mexico to begin doing its part to address climate change. The ETA incorporates stronger language for a new Renewable Portfolio Standard negotiated by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham just this weekend. In response, Conservation Voters New Mexico Executive Director Demis Foster released the following statement.
“We at CVNM supported Gov. Lujan Grisham early in her campaign because of her dedication to bringing New Mexicans together to create solutions and the Energy Transition Act is evidence of this commitment in her administration. CVNM is proud to support the Energy Transition Act,” says Demis Foster, CVNM Executive Director. “The ETA is a leap forward toward the Governor’s vision and plan to lay the groundwork for an equitable transition to clean energy like wind and solar.”
“We came to the table on this issue over a year ago to ensure that any conversation regarding moving away from coal production be holistic in its approach to address economic, environmental and justice impacts. We will not leave the families who have generated our electricity for decades behind – and the Energy Transition Act achieves this.”
