Turning Environmental Values Into State Priorities

Protecting our environment starts with the people of New Mexico. Conservation Voters New Mexico Education Fund helps people make real changes in their communities by protecting and improving the quality of their water, air, neighborhoods, farmlands and wildlife. We work to give citizens the knowledge and skills they need to be effective advocates for conservation.

New Mexicans speak, Pit Rule still rolled back
In 2012, Conservation Voters New Mexico Education Fund and SouthWest Organizing Project delivered over 12,000 petitions from across the state to the Governor’s office in support of protecting our Pit Rule. That means that over 12,000 New Mexicans believe in protecting our strong Pit Rule for our clean water and, in turn, our families.

Thank you for standing with us and speaking up to protect our groundwater.

Unfortunately, the Martinez administration didn’t listen. Two of the three Oil Conservation Commission (OCC) members voted to weaken the rule. One thing is clear: the Martinez administration’s values are out of step with those of the majority of New Mexicans.

But the fight doesn’t end here. Help us spread the message – call Governor Martinez and let her know you support keeping our water clean and are disappointed in the OCC ruling. Let us know what you think about weakening protections for our groundwater. Tell us why water is important to you. Call us at 505.992.8683 or email

Our families need clean water - Nuestras familias necesitan agua limpia

The New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission approved amendments to weaken our Pit Rule on February 15. By weakening our Pit Rule, our safe drinking water is in jeopardy. Our water needs your voice. Tell Governor Martinez what you think about the OCC weakening our groundwater protections. Call her at 505.476.2200.

About the Pit Rule:

  • The Pit Rule prevents oil and gas companies from polluting our water.
  • La regla “Pit” prohibe que las companias de petroleo y gas contamina nuestra agua.
  • Governor Martinez shouldn’t put oil and gas companies ahead of the health and safety of our families.
  • Gobernadora Martinez no debe poner las companias de petroleo y gas en frente de la salud y seguridad de nuestras familias.
